Meet Your Representatives
Executive Branch
Following our federal and state government’s structure, there are three branches of Student Government: Executive, Legislative and Judicial.
The following comprise the Executive branch: President, Executive Vice President, Vice President of Finance, Academic Affairs Officer, Chief Diversity Officer and Chief Government Relations Officer.
The student body elects the President, Executive Vice President and Vice President of Finance each spring and they serve a one-year term commencing on June 1.
The new President appoints the Academic Affairs Officer, Chief Diversity Officer, and Chief Government Relations Officer each year and the Senate confirms them. In addition to guiding and directing the operations of Student Government, officers work alongside full-time staff to oversee ASI in its capacity as a non-profit corporation. Members of the Executive branch meet and interact with a variety of university officials, local business and government leaders, and federal and state legislators to express students’ views on a variety of issues and advocate on the student body’s behalf.
The critical components of the Executive Branch are:
Presidential Cabinet – supervised by the ASI Chief Diversity Officer and comprised of student volunteers in charge of advising the president on relevant issues and providing programming, legislative and policy making support for students.
Beach Team – supervised by the Government Affairs graduate assistant and serves as an introduction to ASI and Student Government, while providing leadership opportunities to all incoming first-year students and transfer students. Beach Team instills the values and practices of Student Government, while promoting outreach, involvement in campus events, teamwork and giving students the tools needed for advancement in ASI.

Sonny Ciampa
ASI President
Sonny Ciampa is a third-year undergraduate student majoring in Political Science with a strong desire to pursue a career in politics. As a Long Beach native, Sonny understands firsthand the real challenges students face in the local community. Sonny’s journey in student leadership began with Beach Team, an Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) led program, which introduced him to Student Government. Sonny went on to serve as a Senator At-Large for Athletics, where he worked to increase school spirit and student engagement in connection with athletic events and the broader campus community. Beyond ASI, Sonny became actively involved in Phi Alpha Delta, a professional law fraternity, as well as other political student organizations on campus.
Beyond ASI and campus organizations, there have been several personal experiences that have influenced Sonny’s approach to campus life and politics. Growing up on the autism spectrum, Sonny knows what it feels like to be excluded and unrepresented. This personal experience inspired him to become an advocate for disability rights and to be a voice for those who often go unheard, ensuring that every student feels seen and valued.
Both campus life and personal experiences have influenced Sonny’s political and leadership philosophy, which can be summarized as the fact that he enjoys building genuine connections with students. Sonny leads with a visibility-first approach, believing that strong leadership starts with showing up, listening with an open mind and engaging with student life. When Sonny is not on campus, you can often find him swimming at the beach or hanging out with his friends. Now serving in this new student leadership role, Sonny is committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, is supported and represented during their time at Long Beach State.
Shelton King Jr.
Executive Vice President
Shelton King Jr. is a fourth-year political science major with a passion for constitutional law. Motivated by the far-reaching impact of local and federal policies on the people of the United States, he is committed to holding unjust systems accountable and driving positive change.
Raised in Compton by a hardworking single mother, Shelton was instilled with the values of community, perseverance, service and selflessness. These principles, along with witnessing his mother raise himself and his three younger sisters, shaped his deep-rooted desire to support others and to become involved in any way he could. From volunteering at his church, to helping his fellow students in need, Shelton constantly pursues opportunities that put him in a position to help others.
Shelton’s college journey began in Baltimore, where he studied electrical engineering and honed essential skills in leadership, conflict resolution and collaboration. After transferring to Long Beach State, he quickly found a sense of belonging on campus and saw the community as family—one he is dedicated to supporting. His drive to serve led him to run for Executive Vice President, with the goal of tackling real student concerns like parking, increased aid for low-income students, modernizing outdated campus systems and advocating for transformative projects like Future U.
Kim Nguyen

That passion led her to pursue a degree in computer science, where she has explored a range of disciplines that connect to high-impact fields.
Raised in Southern California, Kim decided to continue her academic journey at LBSU. Here, she found a sense of belonging through the TRiO Student Support Services program and the California Consortium for Public Health Informatics and Technology. She also built meaningful relationships and lifelong friendships, especially within the College of Engineering and Associated Students Inc. (ASI) Student Government.
Before college, Kim developed a passion for public service and community involvement through her active participation at her local library. That experience fueled her motivation to get involved in ASI as a trustee at-large during her junior year.
Outside of academics and work, Kim finds joy in traveling. Whether it’s a weekend road trip or an international adventure, she loves immersing herself in new sights and cultures, meeting people from diverse backgrounds and stepping outside her comfort zone. Her experiences have taught her to be independent and open-minded, and they continue to shape how she sees the world.
